-The lights

The Danish word JUL, meaning Christmas, is the very essence of the trendy word “HYGGE”. HYGGE is a kind of warm and comforting cosiness - actually not that easy to describe. It is close to impossible, to create HYGGE without the presence of candlelights, thuss the Danes light up their Christmas tree with real candles.

No electricity - thank you!

Food and warm drinks contributes to the HYGGE-lige atmosphere any time of the year and is accompanied by home made sweets made of nougat, chocolate and marzipan at Christmas time.
In 1900 the Danes created a rice pudding to be served as a dessert at Christmas time; “Ris a la mande”. It is a porridge cooked on white rice and fat milk, cooled and mixed with whipped cream, sugar, vanilla and chopped almonds.
The topping is warm cherry sauce. One whole almond will be mixed in the dessert and the lucky person who finds the whole almond will receive a gift called “mandel-gaven” - GOD APPETIT!
